Cyril Rolando‘s artistic approach is set between surreal and fantasy style… in one word : Otherworldly. He never took art courses that’s why he have few anatomy/perspective notions. He works with intuition to compensate for this lack of knowledge and venture into colors.

Cyril started to draw on computer in the end of 2003, doing oekakies, trying to improve himself on this software and share his work with a community. He understood quickly that he was really unable to draw with a manga style. Line-arts bothered him, and without anatomic notions, he found it really hard.

Some months later, he worked from photo-references and tried to perform the realism. He worked with a mouse, so he was quite limited but he met the color question and he tried to play with contrasts.

After the ultra realism time, he tried to play with the surrealism things, changing the colors, adding fantasy elements or disturbing the physical  rules.

Tim Burton and Hayao Miyazaki are both the roots of my his world. He likes the surrealism movement, especially the work of Boris Vian and his Foam of the Daze (l’écume des jours – 1950). He likes the absurdity, the creativity and the enchanting universes, where colors bring more emotions than thousand smiles or a million tears. Cyril doesn’t think his art is in the surrealist movement, It’s not a thing he decided. He just paints what he would like to see, a funny reality, otherworldly.

“I am curious of life. I admire the work of the time, the evolution of societies, the change of thoughts, the human revolutions….how drops after drops are born oceans. I choose the pseudo Aquasixio to put together my favorite element with my favorite digit. My characters are often lost children in quest for their truth (and not THE truth). Their stories are quite sad but the darkness of life is more inspiring than happy and safe people, in my opinion.”

He is imaginative, so when he gets bored of the world, he have fun with a parodic version of the reality. An ant carring the Earth, an Eiffel Tower as a bloom, a lake of Champagne…. he thinks his works are like a series of photographs. It tells a story, his story, his way to understand the world or what he could say about its quaintness.

“My artworks mark the different times of my life. I want to express myself, like an art therapy. I want to bring out pain, joy and expectations. My inspiration is focused on the global color sheme of the painting. The colors are the main way to translate my feelings. I like to add a lot of details. I am sure sometimes it’s not necessary and makes heavy the composition, but this is an important part of a rebus. More details, more way to read the picture, more chance to be lost and find oneself. There isn’t a unique way to read my picture, see what you want, see what you wish to see, see a part of yourself. A mirror of your feeling ?”
